According
to the State of Illinois School Code, when an attendance center has an
enrollment of 20 or more limited English proficient students
of the same language classification, the school district
must establish transitional Bilingual program for each
classification represented by such students.
These
programs are designed to assist students who come from
backgrounds in languages other than English and who need
specialized instruction to continue progress in school.
A
transitional Bilingual Education Program includes the
following components:
- Instruction
in subjects in the student's home language and in
English;
- Instruction
in the language arts in the student's native language and
in English as a Second Language;
- Instruction
in the history and culture of the country, territory, or
geographic area which is the native land of the students
or of their parents and in the history and culture of the
United States.
